WASTELAND AND SUSTAINABILITY

WASTELAND AND SUSTAINABILITY

During my google searches for Wasteland, I saw a lot of arid land, wastelands. As soon as I see all this, there's only one thing that comes to mind. Disappear. And what is disappearing here is all of humanity, maybe all of living life. There is not much more to be said for Wasteland because that is where it all ends completely. It is a completely arid land, an area similar to a vast desert. If you look at the weather, there is an air that overwhelms you where a person will open up. There is no trace of the old world. A completely dead world. When we say Wasteland, a completely dead world comes to life in our minds. But are there things that are still living in this dead world? Of course there is. Robots. Robots live because it is no longer a favorable area for humanity. Of course, it's the person who made it like this.

So how do we get back from here?

First of all, we need to understand how we got to this point in order to go back. Because even if we go back, we can become like this again by making the same mistakes as human beings. We need to know how to create a sustainable life in this. We must create a sustainable lifestyle, a world so that the world does not turn into a wasteland.

Stuart Walker "Waste Land: sustainability and designing with dignity" in his article, he mentioned this topic as follows;

This is a discipline capable of complex combat problems that arise when the problem is not clearly or narrowly defined, where information is incomplete and various conclusions are possible;

This is due to the nature of the so-called ‘bad problems’ and the trained designer combining analytical and synthetic approaches, solve such problems. The contemporary struggle for sustainability is such a bad problem. It also covers environmental, social and economic considerations as deep concepts of individual purpose and personal meaning

the heart of what it is to be human. Obviously, our current way of life is

unsustainable — only modern interpretations of the good life have not been proven be environmentally destructive, socially divisive and economically unequal, they also nurtured and helped create widespread discontent. (Walker, (2014)

So roughly what is sustainability?

Sustainability can also be defined as a socio-ecological process characterized by the search for a common ideal. An ideal is, by definition, not achievable for a given place and time. However, by approaching it persistently and dynamically, the process leads to a sustainable system. Ecological science believes that sustainability is achieved through the balance of species and surrounding resources. To achieve this balance, the available resources should not be consumed faster than production by natural means.
